It was a huge night for the Philippines last night as Lournence Ilagan won the fifth stage of “The World” darts tournament coupled with the Philippine National Team win of the IDF World Cup Team Championship.
Ilagan joined Ronald Briones to become the 2nd Filipino “The World” Stage winner. It also marks the third time in 5 Stages a Filipino has won as Brinones won Stage 1 as well as the most recently played Stage 4. Brinones was notably absent during this fifth Stage which was played in Shanghai China. Paul Lim was the opponent in the finals, and it was Deja Vu as Ilagan defeated Paul Lim in the finals of last year’s Stage 5.
Later that night, the Philippine National Team consisting of Lourence Ilagan, Angelyn Valmadrid, Eduardo Santos, Alain Abiabi, Brunno Parungao, Ramon Sabalboro captured the IDF World Cup Team Championship, defeating the US National Team. I was able to watch a cricket leg of a laggy stream of the finals against the US before the stream froze… and all I can say it was tense and very close with the game seeing both teams over 1000 points.
Even though I was born and raised in Hawaii, I am of Filipino ancestry and stand today being very proud of the Filipino soft tip dart players, as it looks like the Philippines is producing some of the very top talent today.
